Mobile accessibility: WCAG principles and how it improves UX (Part 1)

Digital products should be designed with users having physical limitations in mind. So how can interface and experience designers hurdle this challenge? This four-part series provides guidance and highlights the relevance of mobile accessibility, its relationship with user experience, and how Mobile Interaction champions its principles by creating meaningful experiences to the digital products the company produces.

 

Principle 1: Perceivable

 

Small screen size

Think mobile-first before designing with the goal of creating a responsive design with minimal information (with reasonable default size for content and touch controls). 

 

For portrait layouts, place form fields below, rather than beside, their labels.

 

 

 

Zoom/Magnification

The user must be able to pan horizontally and vertically and to make sure that the browser pinch zoom is unblocked and should be able to zoom the page to at least 200%. 

 

Offer options on-screen functions to alter text size and access to OS text size settings.

 

 

 

Contrast

Always keep in mind that devices are used for both indoors and outdoors. It is important to keep in mind strong or faint lighting or the time of day. The correct practice of providing good contrast minimises challenges for users who have poor vision.

 

 

 

Non-Linear screen layouts

In a small screen set-up you can control the user’s eye-path better when information is presented from the top to bottom.

 

Other layouts tend to start from the middle part of the screen for a better visual experience.
